Abdusalam’s story – Protection

Abdusalam is a 16-year-old Uyghur boy. He has six elder sisters and one brother. His parents used to make Nan (a kind of local bread) and sold it to earn money. This was the major income source to support his whole family. Several years ago, his father had an operation on his eyes and has not been able to work ever since. His family now has no income source. This caused Abdusalam to drop out of school after finishing his primary education.

After Abdusalam left school, he saw the Children Activity Centre as his only place to play and study after work. He comes to center everyday, attends various activities, studies Chinese characters, and helps to edit the Children’s Newspaper. Since he joined the Centre as a key member, he has become a very open and motivated boy.

"I found it to be a very interesting place. In the centre, I can have fun and make more friends from games and sharing. At the same time, I can learn many things from training workshops held in the Centre, such as child rights, child protection, and HIV and AIDS prevention. Now I can say “NO” to drugs…
