Emergency Alert! Niger Food Crisis !

2012-06-05
A hunger crisis is unfolding across Niger– caused by limited rainfall, failed crops, increases in food prices and eroded resiliency.

Current Situation:

  • An estimate of  6.4 million people have been affected by the food crisis, over 1 million children are now facing starvation, over 50% of children under 5 are chronically malnourished, affecting their health and future development
  • There is a deficit of 692,000 tons of cereals, meaning families are desperately struggling to get enough to eat

What we have done :

  • Through our multi-sectoral response we have now reached over 250,000 beneficiaries through interventions including curative health consultations, treatment for moderate and severe malnutrition and cash transfers to the most vulnerable households
  • We support 382 health structures in three regions so that thousands of children, pregnant women and new mothers can access free healthcare
  • We have trained over 1,000 community volunteers to screen and refer cases of malnutrition
  • We’re supporting tens of thousands of people, enabling them to buy food and basic supplies

What you can do?

We are planning to reach 185,000 of the most vulnerable families (1.3 million people) to help stop them falling into hunger and build resilience to future crises. We are scaling up our operations as fast as we can. We need your help before they deteriorate further.

  • HK$180 could pay for sachets of oral rehydration salts to help treat 1000 children suffering from diarrhea
  •  HK$450 could provide a vital cash grant to a family with young children, enabling them to purchase food for their children and help protect and grow their means of earning a living
  • HK$1800 could pay for running an ambulance for a week, providing vital transport to take young children who are severely malnourished for treatment in a stabilisation centre. Without this, many children would not survive

With your help we can stop this crisis becoming a catastrophe!
